GetBasic is a nonprofit organization that endeavors to empower people to become more involved with the media.
GetBasic informs and assists grassroots citizens to become the media by giving them the necessary tools to make media and publish it on the web.
Our workshops include:
- Media-watch. We analyze media and offer constructive criticism in an effort to correct media imbalance due to the increasing concentration of the media in fewer and fewer corporate hands. We also encourage the public to become media activists rather than passive consumers of news.
- Media literacy. In order to be functionally literate in our media-saturated world, children and young people-in fact, all of us-have to be able to read the messages that daily inform us and entertain us. The critical thinking skills will help young people to navigate through traditional media.
- Skills training. We offer media skills training for NGO's, schools, syndicates,... These training can consist of interview skills and handling the press for organizations who want to get their voices heard; but we also train organizations who want to influence debate, shape public opinion and garner public attention by making media themselves and publish it on the web.
