How do I convert my (mobile phone) video?

Even though most mobile phones support standard mobile video formats (more info), you might encounter format related problems at some point. Either the file format coming from your phone is hard to work with, or you need to convert your mobile phone video to use it in a video edit. You might even want to convert your edited video (back) to a mobile video format, so that you can offer it people to watch it on their mobile phones. This is where conversion software comes in.

Again, there are loads of conversion programs. Most of them are not available for free. There is however one program that is both very useful and available for free.

Super is a video format encoding and trans-coding tool. It is completely free and looks very powerful and easy to use. Super encodes video files to any of the most popular formats and codecs (H264, Mpeg-4, 3gp, AAC, mp3, FLV (flash video), aac, mov, Mpeg I and II, SWf as well as pre built for I-Pod, pocketPC and PSP devices). Since Super supports importing from and exporting to the 3GP format, this looks like a very handy tool to work with mobile phone video.

3GP, third generation mobile video standard
3GP is a file format specifically developed for third generation mobile devices. It is based on the Mpeg-4 file format. You can play the downloaded 3GP file on your PC using QuickTime or RealPlayer. When working with mobile (phone) video, you'll often encounter this file format.
